Quick and Easy Broccoli Recipe

After the longest train ride, staying at Novotel Beijing Peace Hotel, China, I was starving and the fish fillet, broccoli and rice and fruit salad seemed like the best thing to order for room service that night. BUT when it got here, the meal was a whole load of things I didn't eat. The fruits were soaked in yogurt. Bleh! There was a lot of white sauce with my broccoli and rice. If you know me, you know I don't like garlic and I only eat a handful red sauces, because white sauces are usually made up of cheese, mayonnaise, mustard or things that I just don't enjoy in my diet.

"You're in China, alone, with limited funds. If there's ever a time to try something new, it's now", I told myself. So I did. To my surprise I enjoyed it, so much that I started eating just the sauce with rice. I decided to check out some recipes since I've been back home and here's what I decided to try:

Serving size: 4 (if used as a side dish)

Time: 15-20 mins


4 cups of broccoli florets

3 cloves of garlic/ 2 teaspoons of crushed garlic

2-3 spoons of olive oil

salt (optional - to taste)

black pepper (optional - to taste)


1. Heat the olive oil in a skillet over low-medium heat

2. Add crushed garlic to pan and saute` for 1 minute

3. Wash and add the broccoli, salt and pepper to the skillet and toss until broccoli turns bright green and becomes tender.

4. Remove from the skillet and serve.

Note: If you like your broccoli soft like I do, you can choose to steam it for 1 minute before sauteing, or saute` for longer over a low heat. Also, if the texture of multiple pieces of garlic bothers you or you just don't want to see it, I got it. Opt to blend your ingredients, then drizzle it on your steamed broccoli or use it as a dip.

Side note before you go:

Let's not forget the nutritional value of these foods. Apart from being low in calories, broccoli is rich in nutrients like fiber, protein and vitamin C, while garlic with even fewer calories is known for it's medicinal properties with its generous dose of manganese, and vitamins C and B6.

DON'T FORGET TO BRUSH AFTER TO STOP GARLIC BREATH or have this meal with the following:

  • Milk

  • Apples, parsley, and/or spinach

  • A little lemon juice or

  • Try oil pulling, which improves breath and has added health benefits.
